The Real Truth
The latest US State Department advisory warning tourists about crime specifically names cities that are in the north of Mexico along the US-Mexico border. They are Tijuana, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros and most specifically Ciudad de Juarez. These are cities thousands of miles from the warm and sunny beaches of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The ONLY reference in the US State Department's advisory which mentions the Yucatan, Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, or the Riviera Maya is a reference to another State Department warning against drinking too much and driving mopeds.
To give you an idea of the distance of these cities from the beach areas it is approximately 2200 miles from Cancun. This is equivalent to the distance from New York City to San Francisco. Would you refuse to vacation in Northern California because of a crime wave in New York? Hopefully not.
We are not saying that there is no crime in this part of Mexico. Cancun is a major city and has had its problems just as any US city has experienced as well. But it is important to understand that these incidents have NOT involved tourists or happened in the hotel zone or resort areas.
It is important to remember that every tourist zone is going to have its share of crime. Vacationers always will attract pickpockets, thieves and con artists. In Cancun / Playa del Carmen there are tourist police designed to help with these types of crimes and to assist visitors. We can only recommend that you use common sense, avoid drugs, stick to well known areas and don't behave foolishly (getting extremely drunk, flashing lots of cash, etc) and you should be as safe as if you were at home.
Thousands upon thousands of visitors are still coming to this area each day to enjoy the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters without incident.
